As I approached the large, stone edifice that was my medical school building, I was intimidated by the enormity of what lay ahead. But I realized in my first few days at the clinics that true medicine lay beyond books; it was at the bedside that a detailed knowledge base met diagnostic skill and was artfully translated into patient care. I was enticed by this field as it is akin to the base of a pyramid; a broad, solid foundation of medical knowledge. It is challenging working with a diverse patient population with an array of medical conditions and treating their problems in entirety reaching a diagnosis, yet allows perspective by considering differentials. Internal medicine lets me integrate my clinical reasoning with rewarding, long-lasting patient interaction.
A research project in medical school taught me the significance of teamwork in medicine. It gave an insight into research methodology besides fortifying my leadership skills and instilling in me the virtues of synergy and partnership. As comfortable as I am showing the way, it is sometimes essential to step back and follow the lead. My love for sharing knowledge rivals that of gaining it. As a resident, I played a leading role in teaching, be it pointing out an interesting physical finding to a student or sharing the art of case presentations with my fellow residents. I feel at ease explaining test results to patients and guiding them towards a healthier lifestyle. I am accustomed at every stage to ask "Why?” and referring to scientific journals, appraising their level of evidence and using my clinical judgment to apply these findings to patient care. Cardiology and Gastroenterology are areas I would like to explore for further
