A nurse entertains many of the same qualities in which a mother does. I believe that a nurse must be hardworking, compassionate, empathetic, and able to work as a team player. Throughout my four years of high school and freshman year of college, I think I have strengthened in these specific qualities through my school work, my job, and my extracurricular activities. Throughout my higher education, I learned how to be realistic with my goals, how to balance and prioritize, and how to take on new challenges. When I was admitted, it did not take long for me to choose Michigan State to further my education. As a high school student, I began to consider my future and what career would fit me best. It was obvious that my past experiences and interests would play a role. Growing up, science was always my strength and the classes that always kept me wanting more. So, as I began to look deeper into what Michigan State would offer to me, I had realized that I could see myself as a Spartan Nurse. What drew me into the program, was the intense competition. I have always been a competitive person and I knew a spot in the program would be something that I would have to compete for. Additionally, the hands on clinical experiences had impacted my decision, as I believe hands on work would best prepare me for my future as a Nurse. I believe that the prerequisite course work that I have taken as a freshman gave me an insight on how difficult the next three years would be, but they have kept me determined and have strengthened my knowledge of science which will help me to succeed in the future. To be known as a Spartan Nurse would be very special to me. Michigan State is known for its academic excellence and the university makes an effort to make its community known throughout the United States. I participated in two Varsity sports, attended youth group, volunteered in the church, helped out with my little sister, and worked two jobs. I learned to become very patient, sensible, and brave in this time of my life. Being ten years older than my sister has impacted me greatly, as I embodied the characteristics of a mother at a young age. These characteristics were evident as I spent my days working at a nursing home for the past three years. It was not an easy job, mostly because I spent almost every day with my grandma, who was ailing in health. Although I was seeing my grandma’s health go downhill, the years that I have spent working at the nursing home and with her, showed me why nurses are so important. I wanted to be the one to change the lives of others, as many nurses that worked with my grandma had. While working I was able to form relationships with many of the residents, their families, and other employees. I experienced days filled with happiness, but also with devastation. There were times when I had to be strong and times when I, too, needed to laugh. This experience taught me a different kind of love, to love somebody at their weakest. Aside from my time at the nursing home, much of my time was taken up in sports, school, and church. As a senior, I challenged myself in my course work.
