“The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision ‘’(Helen Killer) .As a child that had faced adversity , I always had the mindset and determination that I was going be greater than my past and current situations. During my adolescent’s years I had lived in an unstable environment. My mother had been mentally and financially unstable for as long as I can remember. My mother and grandmother were both users of crack cocaine. My grandmother was the main parent figure in my family life. Due to my grandmother’s heart conditions, she was not able to work so she depended on state benefits and section 8 housing to provide for my siblings and I. When it came to family I never knew my dad; it was just my siblings, my mother, my grandmother and her immediate family. Only thing I knew that I wanted to be in a field where I would be able to assist and mentor the youth. By the end of the freshmen year I was introduced to the major Social Work and I instantly I knew the major was exactly for me. Attending Delaware State University was a blessing in disguise being a first generation to attend college and receiving the opportunities that made such a positive impact in my life. Every opportunity I had received, assisted me with learning more about myself my limits, abilities and the qualities I have that set me apart from others.
