“The question is, are we happy to suppose that our grandchildren may never be able to see an elephant except in a picture book?” – David Attenborough

I feel that this quote fully summarises why I want to study this course - I have an undeniable urge to learn everything that I can about the Animal Kingdom, and experience it for myself. I want to make a difference and help those species in need. This course will give me the opportunity to learn the skills needed to complete research, aid conservation efforts and gain knowledge and understanding of how to preserve and protect the fragile environment and all of its inhabitants. Once I am equipped with this knowledge, I can ensure my life is devoted to conservation and research.

To get involved, I volunteered at Brysons Animal Shelter and RSPCA Felledge Animal Centre – both of which allowed me to experience animals that needed help first-hand. I have also volunteered for ORCA Our Seas, whose aim is to educate the general public about the damage that littering can have on marine animals. ORCA also allowed volunteers to go on monthly surveys to track the population of whales and dolphins within the North Sea. This gave me the chance to convey my enthusiasm and the importance of looking after our oceans to children and their parents, as well as allowing me to improve my marine classification skills. Another voluntary project that I was involved in was with the North East Cetacean Project – which was surveying the North coast for any types of marine mammals, and recording the findings to gain understanding of population numbers. I also helped with a conservation scheme in the North Sea to increase Lobster populations due to overfishing. I am also about to undergo a voluntary project for the WWT which involves learning about conservation efforts, gaining classification skills and building enclosures/habitats for endangered birds. This gives me a new perspective of a species that I wouldn't normally be able to come into contact with, and allows me to gain knowledge of many different types of birds at a close
