My aspiration for when I graduate The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is to become the successful successor of my father’s lawn care business. I am pursuing a degree in Business Administration with a minor in Italian with hopes of graduating and applying all the knowledge I gain into my father’s lawn care business. My father started his own lawn care business 5 years ago, but because of his legal status in this country, he cannot take his business to its full potential. Once I take charge my father’s business, my goal will be to maximize the company to its true potential and take it further than my father ever imagined. Tony was 20 years old when he became the sole proprietor of Tony’s Lawn Service, he decided to start his own lawn care bussiness after having worked for his uncle for 6 years. He knew he had what it took to be successful on his own, and his determination has gotten him where he is today. Tony commenced with informing me with the characteristics and traits one must have to succeed in this particular career field. He said the trait that was the most critical to have is exceptional communication skills. As a business owner having exceptional communication skills is critical because of the importance that communicating effectively with one’s clients and employees plays in the overall success of the company. I believe I have strong communication skills but I know that there is always room for improvement. Having to communicate with clients is not going to be an issue for me because I have been exposed to communicating with my father’s clients over the years. Communicating with clients is not solemnly just communicating about the service you are providing, it is about building relationships, and trust with them to form a family oriented relationship according to Tony, because “clients are more than just the individuals who pay you”. That is something that really resonates with me, I have always attempted to build relationships with my father’s clients and they have appreciated based on the positive feedback I have received. That is why I firmly believe that the communication aspect of being a business is owner is not going to be a weak link when I step into my father’s shoes. However, communicating with employees is going to be new to me. I have never been exposed to being an employer of a company and it makes me nervous when I ponder about the idea of having to balance a professional relationship with a friendship.
