Spanish culture has always interested me because I have Spanish roots. Specifically, I am excited to immerse myself in Spanish traditions where traditions such as La Tomatina, bull runs, and flamenco dances take place. I feel that studying abroad in Spain will allow me to really become a part of their culture by participating in the many traditions and events Spain is known for. In addition, I am interested in learning more about the Spanish language in depth. For instance, Spain offers me the chance to learn and practice the Galician dialect. This is an exciting opportunity for me because it will change how I use my Spanish while in Spain. Since the Spanish I was taught is different from the Spanish used in Spain, I am ready to challenge myself by re-learning Spanish which will allow me to communicate with others in a new and different way. As a Latina, I am curious to learn more about how the Spanish language developed and how it ultimately evolved into the language I have come to know today. This is a quote that stuck with me from one of the study abroad information sessions because it brings up the issue of personal challenges that I might encounter while in Spain. In fact, I do not see this as a con to studying abroad, but rather as a challenge to look forward to. What intrigues me in particular about this challenge is that I will learn to live with a host family and other students whom I might not know –all the while in a country that I have never visited.
