Medicine is a domain that is progressing rapidly. With each new dawn new research papers are being published that aim to provide better treatments for those who are ill. As someone with a high level of curiosity and keen scientific interest, this lifelong learning aspect of medicine has continued to motivate me towards pursuing this career. Through observing doctors in both primary and tertiary healthcare settings I was able to witness the unique blend of constant scientific stimulation, teamwork and patient interaction that the life of a doctor provides. Throughout this experience, I was able to observe the various roles of each member of the ward team in order to manage each patients treatments on the busy ward and the importance of teamwork during stressful situations. Witnessing, a doctor tell a patient their myeloma diagnosis I learnt of the emotional stresses that a doctor can face and the need to remain empathetic and compassionate as this played a crucial role in ensuring the treatment plan put in place to addressed the patients both medical and personal needs. Whilst carrying out work experience in the infectious diseases department I saw the importance of critical thinking that allowed the doctors to make quick and effective decisions in high pressure situations in order to potentially save a patients life. Participating in a HIV ward round I was able to see how the deep social stigma surrounding the disease affected the patients mental wellbeing and how the doctors remained sensitive and understanding when approaching one patient refusing to take the treatment. After carrying out work experience in tertiary healthcare settings I decided to gain experience in the community setting. During my time at a GP surgery, I was able to see the impacts of the ageing population and stresses this has created within the healthcare system. All of these experiences have further strengthened my desire to study medicine and removed any previous doubts about my aspired
