The Pull
It was gratifying to see how often friends and family cited characteristics that pull others towards me, most notably being humble and a role model because it is often hard to gauge your effect on others. However, I was honored to hear from multiple people that my impact has largely been one of positivity. For example, each year in our high school soccer program an older veteran player is paired with a younger athlete to help integrate them into the school. Throughout the season my younger “buddy” truly became my number one fan, and I knew that it was my responsibility for my actions and character to reciprocate her devotion to this relationship. In this sense, one enabler that showcases my determination is the competitive environment that I am constantly immersed in as a student-athlete. Going up against some of the best athletes and students in the country, being on both a Division I soccer team and enrolled in the Carlson School of Management, I am constantly pushing myself to rise up or set the standard for those around me. That being said, I thrive in situations that place sole accountability on myself as I enjoy being the one determining my own fate. As a result, working in an uncommitted or dispassionate group or team can be challenging when I must delegate tasks to others. Again, in a professional context, it is likely everyone will be competing for the next promotion or new opportunity, and I need to narrow my sights on finding success for myself, rather than letting the next person in line take that chance from me. Continuing to implement a “go-getter” attitude will hopefully foster and develop my character to a point where a future employer would see me as fit to be a leader within an organization, as my previous experience as both a role model and mentor could certainly contribute in that
