The National Academy of Engineering delivered fourteen grand challenges for engineering in the 20th century(including making solar energy economical, reverse-engineering the brain, and providing energy from fusion) that are believed to be the greatest problems facing man. By studying mechanical engineering, I hope to gain a broad understanding of the mechanics of the world around me and apply that knowledge to the growth of mankind. I am very passionate about technology and hope to be able to develop something that will address these and other challenges by employing my passion. I want to improve the world we live in and maintain the long term survival of society. I have always had great dreams but lacked the means to achieve them due to monetary restrictions. With the assistance of the Forty Acres program I will be able to not only attend college, but have the opportunity to participate in internships that will allow me to take part in research and study engineering problems firsthand. While at UT I hope to visit developing countries to learn about what issues plague them and hinder their growth. One day I hope to not only understand these problems but posses the knowledge and experience needed to solve them.However, I recognize that the solution will not come from one individual but rather a group of motivated engineers that are committed to leading the charge to a better world. In the time I have spent at UT I have meet such people. I know that by being a Forty Acres Scholar the chances of meeting and working with people that share my dedication will only increase. Being surrounded by other hardworking individuals that will one day lead their respective fields will grant me the opportunity to network and integrate myself into a community of the hardest working
