As with any organization, the leader sets the tone. In a school setting, the principal is the leader. People look to the leader for direction and guidance. The students, teachers, other school administrators, campus leaders respond and follow the actions of the principal. As the principal of a school, I will be responsible for the overall operation of my school. I realize that it is unwise to view my responsibility to manage and my obligation to lead as two separate entities. In order to be an effective principal, I will work to harmonize my obligation as the leader and my responsibilities as the manager.
In order to be a more effective leader of my organization, I will use strategies that allow me to combine leadership and management. Rather than functioning in the role of micro-manager or enforcers of fundraisers, I would decide to execute my delegation abilities. Instead of playing a policing role in the fundraising process, I would rather assume a coaching role. Allowing the PTA or other school administrators to manage my school’s fundraising efforts is a way to nurture and support the growth of other leaders on campus. Fundraising is necessary and it goes with the territory of being a school administrator. I would carefully form my fundraising team. I would collaborate with my team to make sure that I have a firm understanding of all the fundraising activity that is to be conducted at the school. In the role of manager as principal, I would establish a protocol to make sure that all fundraising activities were managed properly so that it wouldn’t drain the school’s resources or become a burden to the school
