In my opinion, the intricacy of the human body makes it a science of its own. The time I first realised I wanted to study medicine goes back to when I was 13 years old; which is of me sitting next to my mum in A&E who is waiting to be checked for a suspected heart attack. After successfully treating my mum and gaining a newfound respect from me, those doctors showed me just how rewarding working in the medical profession can be. To the everyday person, the life of a doctor may seem like an organised regime however when attending the summer school at the Bradford Royal Infirmary, I witnessed just how inaccurate that perception actually is. Working effectively as part of a team is vital in a hospital environment where every member of the team has an important role to carry out in order for the hospital to continue running smoothly: this also requires commitment. As being a part of the school’s netball team for the last 6 years, I have experienced how dedication is key in the success of any team. Taking part in the UK Maths Challenge and Biology Challenge has not only provided me with the privilege of becoming best in school but has also reinforced my understanding of my academic subjects: Maths and Further Maths have allowed me to explain my ideas in logical manners, and Biology and Chemistry have helped me delve deeper into the scientific world by analysing and understanding science at a microscopic level. Completing my Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh awards and being in the process of achieving my Gold award has allowed me to develop my interpersonal skills and has given me effective time-management skills, which is important in the medical profession as certain tasks must be done on time. By watching documentaries such as ‘Fighting for Life’ and ‘Sick around the World’, I have learned about the healthcare systems of different countries and also about the development of surgery as we know it
