Throughout my childhood, I attended various private schools. Bright eyed and eager to learn I entered the private school system at the age of six. My mother was a part time student, and full time parent and worker. Being a single mom caused many obstacles in our life. Many of those my mother concealed obsolete for example my tuition. She barely ever talked about it and payed for all of my tuition statements on time. Private school gave me a sense of belonging and I felt privileged to learn with other sharp-witted children. I enjoyed my years of private schooling until I learned my mother did not. She revealed to me that although she adored my schools education system, private school was simply too expensive. I transitioned from an all white school to one of most diverse schools in the district. The Chicago Tribune stated “The U.S. Department of Education projected that minorities would outnumber white kids at public schools beginning in 2014 and continue to increase their numbers.”Although private schools can prepare you for outside life, public schools have more impact due to diversity. Public school can prepare for meeting people who are different. My high school contained a multitude of cultural events for example multicultural days and variety of ethnic clubs and societies. I began associating myself with people who were of various races socioeconomic backgrounds. This lead me to having more stimulating conversations and strengthened my education. In my classes, my teachers performed activities that highlighted diversity for example divergent discussions on immigration. I was no longer had to alienate myself to strict religious customs in exchange for a good education. Due to the cost of private schools, statistically it welcomes those who can afford it. In a recent study, Alexis Buchanan discovered the racial makeup of private schools is very white. “The fact is that, over the years, African-American families and non-white families have come to understand that these private schools are not schools that are open to them, especially in light of their traditional role and history related to desegregation of public schools.” The definition of diversity lies within the public school
