Animal testing has been an issue in the cosmetic industry. Although there have been more brands trying to become cruelty free, there are still too many brands that rely on animal testing. There are different reasons why these brands either refuse to test on animals, and also reasons for brands to continue to test on animals. Animal testing is using animals to test out human products. For example, when a brand comes out with a new shampoo and the shampoo has a particular ingredient that is new to the cosmetic world, the brand has to form a test. Instead of testing on a person who would actually use the shampoo, they would test the new ingredient on an animal. There are labs that have animals caged up, and are used only for testing. For example, if a brand wants to use new ingredients, they can easily test that ingredient on an animal in the lab. In addition, it saves money for the company when they test on animals. Animals do not need to be payed to be test subjects. Looking at the long term effects is easier to do on an animal than a human. “ I can actually follow a mouse from before its conception through to its death in a year or two, and I can see which animals become spontaneously ill and which ones don't, and measure the processes that I think might be involved.” (Rutkin, Aviva).
