Zip! Zap! Zop! When looking into a drama classroom, viewers will see students passing these words around and wonder what the benefits of such a silly class could be. However, this silly class offers many benefits which, when overlooked, can be detrimental to a student’s success. A fine arts education class needs to be required every year of a student’s education. As of now, at East High School and many other schools across the nation, hardly any fine arts classes are required to graduate. The requirement currently at East High is to have completed two credits of fine arts. The objective of this proposal is to help schools see a larger emphasis needs placed on fine arts. Super intendents should make it required for high school students to take a fine arts class every year because of the multiple benefits.
Description of the Problem The major cause of this problem originates from the No Child Left Behind Act. The No Child Left Behind Act was passed as a law in 2002. This act required schools to test kids in reading and math. The amount of funding the school received centers on how many students were proficient on these tests. Metla (2015) writes, “The No Child Left Behind Act and the Common Core State Standards have placed greater emphasis on core subjects, such as math and reading.
