Legalize Marijuana Ever since Colorado voters legalized pot in 2012, whether or not marijuana should be legalized everywhere has been a heated and controversial topic. Those who oppose the legalization of marijuana feel it should be illegal for many reasons. Some of those reasons include the claims that marijuana is addictive and that it stops its users from their own freewill. Opposers also claim that using softer drugs, such as marijuana, can lead to people using harder drugs. In other words, they claim that marijuana is a gateway drug. Finally, they claim that legalizing this drug will make children believe that the use of drugs is acceptable. Although opposers do make some logical claims, I feel that most of them are false. I believe that legalizing marijuana is not as bad as it sounds. In fact, I believe that marijuana should be legalized. One of the main reasons why I support the legalization of marijuana is that it can be used for medical purposes. There are many diseases and conditions that marijuana can help relieve the pain from. There are millions of dollars worth of marijuana sold every year. Putting an excise tax of the retail sale of marijuana could raise a great amount of money in revenue. And even if legalizing marijuana doesn’t generate the amount of tax revenue anticipated, it is money that would have otherwise ended up in the black market. Finally, keeping it illegal is expensive. The cost of keeping marijuana illegal includes the cost of incarceration of convicted offenders.
