Should Marijuana be legalized?
“The more we treat some of these issues related to the drug abuse from public health model and not just from an incarceration model, the better off we’re going to be,” said former president Barack Obama on April 15. There are many other drugs much more harmful than marijuana, however, they are legal, while there is still a struggle to legalize marijuana. Marijuana should be legalized because of its medical uses, it would decrease the racial disparity for drug users in the justice system, and it would bring economic benefits for the U.S government.

Legalizing marijuana will also decrease the racial disparity in the Justice system. In the United States, Black people are 3.73 times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession on average. In Iowa, Black people are 8.3 times more likely to be arrested and in New York, 32.3% compared to 15.8% white users. If legalized, marijuana will bring on a change in society. For all the black market drugs dealers, business will go down, eliminating the number of drug dealers arrested in the streets. It will also eliminate marijuana high in THC which is bad for an individual. Another way in which it can change the society is, if large or small industries are put in place to clean and study the drug, it will generate more jobs for youths. Marijuana should be decriminalized, so more people could be penalized for possessing marijuana under decriminalization instead of putting them behind bars. Although more African American sell illegal drugs in the streets, 9-13% black men receive longer sentences for drugs than white.
