What is the cause of the majority of all teen deaths? Teens are not known for their ability to make quality decisions. However, their choices can affect them for the rest of their lives. Nearly 1/3 of all teen fatalities are caused by motor vehicle accidents (Miniño). While some of these deaths can be contributed to weather, road conditions, and drunk drivers, texting and driving can be easily solved and is a waste of an innocent life. Our youth are losing their life because of something as valueless as a text. Over the summer of 2009 the Pew Research Center conducted a survey, and overall, 34% of teens ages 16-17 reported texting and driving (Madden and Lenhart). Although these people wish to see changes in the world, they consider themselves a good enough driver to not be affected, or are simply undisciplined. This issue is growing; fatalities from distracted driving increased 28% between 2005 and 2008 (Wilson and Stimpson). Additionally, an analysis from several sources claimed that there was an increase in texting and driving fatalities by more than 16,000 from 2001 to 2007 (Wilson and Stimpson). This dramatic rise in texting and driving since 2005 makes texting and driving a growing public safety hazard (Wilson and Stimpson). Teens are even more susceptible to these thoughts because they perceive themselves as young and invincible. Therefore, we should help others by removing the temptation caused by having the world’s communication in the pockets of everyone. Teen casualties due to texting and driving could be easily prevented with new technology and a change in social norms. Creating a new and simple way of removing texting from the complex driving process can influence teens to avoid texting while driving for the rest of their
