We all remember the red ribbon week at our schools. The lectures on how drugs affect people who use them. When we were young, we were taught that marijuana would ruin our lives. The marijuana prohibition is still in place in our beautiful state. But in many states, it has been legalized for recreational and medicinal use. In many ways it has positively benefited these states in gaining tax money, and promoting a healthier standard of living. This has started a movement for legalization in South Carolina. While people who are against legalization will point out the stereotypical standard of living it can promote, this is not what it is commonly used for in the states where it has been legalized. However, most of these claims are based on flawed studies. These studies use small sample sizes or only study specific groups and, whether it is intentionally or unintentionally, mislead the public about marijuana and its legalization. This stereotype has lead lawmakers to push against the legalization movement. But scientists have conducted new studies. These studies, conducted in states where marijuana is legal, that show that marijuana actually has many positive benefits that are often overlooked in society. It is physically impossible to overdose on the vanilla substance. These studies also show that the drug has helped people with PTSD, anxiety, chronic pain, depression, seizures, and even cancer. There is also a 33 percent lower obesity rate for those who smoke cannabis, due to the fact that marijuana increases your metabolism by a substantial amount. Marijuana has been shown to help patients in hospitals that suffer from painful or deadly ailments. For thousands of years, the drug has been used medicinally and recreationally. However, it can no longer be used to help those who need it due to restrictions on use of marijuana. This results in a more painful life, and sometimes even a loss of life for patients who would require this substance for a state of well being. If the substance was legal, it may lead to a significant decrease in the workforce. This is because marijuana, like alcohol, impairs judgement. Workplaces are not allowed to let workers use machinery while on marijuana since it can lead to workplace accidents. It may also lead to a significant increase in traffic accidents due to driving under the influence. While these are something to think about in legalization, they are not to be a cause for alarm. If adults can be responsible with marijuana as they are with alcohol, it will allow safe roads and happy
