• Affirmative Action o Definition: Affirmative action is a set of procedures that are designed to eliminate discrimination in the workplace, to fix the discrimination in the past, and to prevent discrimination in the future. o Pro: It breaks stereotypes that regard color. For many years without this policy blacks were not given the same chance as whites for jobs because they were seen as less capable for the job. Because of this policy it was shown that blacks were just as capable. o Con: This policy can reinforce racism and stereotypes. Sometimes people are given a position only because of this policy, so sometimes these people are not fully qualified. Many more criminals are being brought into the prison cells causing overpopulation. • Bilingual Education o Definition: Bilingual education allows people to use both English and a child’s native language for the purpose of educational instruction. o Pro: It will be a great skill for the future. Children who learned to speak multiple languages to be sought out for jobs. This also allows children prepare to adapt the change for future languages to become more popular. o Con: It makes it harder for people who speak foreign languages to assimilate. It makes it harder for foreign language students to have success in school, learning another language shouldn’t have to be an either or proposition. • Hate Crime Laws o Definition: Each person has the right, no matter of race/religion/national origin/ethnicity/physical or mental disability, to be protected from threats of fear/intimidation/harassment/physical harm that is caused by activities of either groups or individual peoples. o Pro: These laws reduce bigotry.
