Direct to consumer advertising has many negative aspects associated with it, but it also has some positive aspects following along with it as well. In a survey conducted by the FDA concerning drug advertising, physicians were questioned on their viewpoint of the topic. According to the survey, Physicians agreed that their patients were a very concerned about their healthcare, and wondering if a certain drug was right for them at that certain time. Likewise, they also saw that the patients asked many thoughtful questions on the topic, and 70% of the patients knew the benefits of the drug thoroughly from the advertisement. The increased knowledge would most likely lead to long discussions of what the best course of action would be, given the patients specific health status. Focusing just on the advertisement, there are benefits to consider as well. There is adequate information pertaining to the risks and benefits of the drug, and how it has been approved to work. Also, if a patient is taking the medication and sees the commercial, the patient may remember to take his/her medication if they are forgetful. …show more content…

Even though the ad helped 70% of patients know the benefits, only 35% of them actually knew the risks. That is a 50% decrease in patients, and the side effects can be very fatal. Also in support of this statistic, the FDA discovered in their survey that the physicians do not believe the ads actually fully cover the negative effects of the drug, which can be misleading to a patient. Physicians have even admitted to being pressured in order to describe a drug because the advertisement made the drug sound like it would work better than it actually
