Controversy #1 Many transgender people, psychologists and researchers supported the declassification of Gender Identity Disorder, due to the creation of a diagnosis for something that is a natural form of gender variance. In fact, most people that it is reinforcing the idea that there are only two genders and that everybody must fit into the two genders, resulting in a stigmatization of transgender people (Lev, 2013). This resulted in a change of wording for the disorder in the DSM-V to gender dysphoria. Gender dysphoria is the feeling of discontent associated with what the person may be feeling rather than suggesting that a difference in gender identity is a disorder (Lev, 2013). While I wish children and adolescents had the ability to fully commit to such a decision and be happy, it has been shown that a lot of gender dysphoric children and youth change their decision about their gender identity in their adolescent years. Therefore, if we allowed children and youth to change their gender identity in those early years, healthcare professionals may have to begin changing the process back after puberty which is creating unnecessary
