Pros And Cons Of Genome Sequencing

1602 Words7 Pages

Genome sequencing aids in determining the complete DNA sequence of an organism. It can help predict susceptibility and drug response to man diseases. There are both pros and cons to this practice, such as privacy, and you will find many different opinions on the topic.

Information used in this process, consists of personal, sensitive and intimate knowledge that needs to be protected. How can we protect the privacy of those involved in the process of whole genome sequencing? This is a concern in regard to this remarkable advancement. There have been many breakthroughs due to this medical accomplishment and privacy is key in order to continue with future advancement in general health and clinical care.

One of the main purposes of GINA is to ease Americans' fears and concerns of genetic discrimination if they decide to undergo genetic testing. Information derived from tests may provide individuals with health benefits such as improving the diagnosis of health conditions and treatment decisions. It can also aid in predicting risk of future disease so that monitoring and preventive care can reduce severity and informing families of risks of disease so that reproductive decisions can be made. Lastly it can assist with medication selection and …show more content…

As the cost falls, whole genome sequencing will be increasingly integrated into clinical care. Clinicians can—and many will—incorporate whole genome sequence information into the clinic to promote the practice of personalized medicine”, (Lee et al, 2012). I believe this would have a huge impact on the care that clinicians provide. It can have a positive impact on the diagnoses and treatment of diseases.

There would be less guessing, so therefore, time would not be wasted on treatments that do not work. This would save money in the long run, also.
Those citizens who have participated in whole genome sequencing, help support the political system through their participation. Therefore, they have the opportunity to benefit from any medical advances as a result. I believe there are many positive benefits of genome sequencing that involve the researchers who are always looking for ways to prevent and treat disease. Genome sequencing is a way to reference common and rare genetic variants in humans. By comparing genome sequencing from one human to another, many associations between them may lead to important discoveries and ultimately guide clinical and personal health
