Reflection On My Writing

This memo is to serve as an update for my writing progress during the quarter. Five weeks have passes since the beginning of the quarter, during which my writing has changed quite a bit. I have learned valuable skills, but as with any skill there are improvements that can be made. This memo is going to highlight one particular skill that improves my writing the most.

Short-Term Writing Goals

Entering the class, my first quarter at UC Davis, I did not know what to expect for a writing class at UC Davis. Did I aim too high or did I aim too low? I now see writing is an entire process. The first major change I tried was how I draft. I started making multiple save files and actually printing each draft. I work with each new file with the new changes I want to make as well as starting my changes on paper. This allows for more creative and adaptable changes. I can go back and forth, completely removing or adding paragraphs as I see fit. The best part is that I can undo it all with ease. This makes drafting easier and very efficient. The other major change I have implemented so far is the focus on PARC when writing. If the paragraph does not help PARC then it goes. Looking forward and trying to address the key area for improvement I plan on adding one more step to my editing process. In the remaining weeks of the quarter I plan to do I more rigorous editing, reading each sentence to as its own entity; to insure that it is clear and concise. I know that this issue is particularly bad in the body paragraphs. When I look ahead to FA3 I see that it will be particularly important, especially when I am trying to educate lay-people about a health topic. I will greatly benefit having another person read my second to last draft, to help flush out the unnecessary
