Throughout my life, I have struggled with writing and reading as a student. This year I am challenging myself by taking many writing based courses such as US history and business communications. Though I’ve improved over time, I not yet seen improvement during the first two semesters. However, by identifying my strengths and weaknesses, I hope to set goals and improve during the last two terms.
Some of my strengths as a writer are creativity, sentence variation, and vocabulary. My favorite pieces of writing was my “Hitchhiker’s Guide to Algonquin” which was one of the first writing assignments. One of my biggest weakness is my lack of motivation. While writing I often get distracted which leaves my work to get piled up and hard to finish. I want to focus on productivity rather than leaving my assignments to the last minute. Because of this method, many assignments aren’t proofread to my best ability and contain many thoughtless mistakes. To fix this, I should prioritize writing small increments of writing, stop working in my room, and turn my cell phone off. Because I rush my essays, I often don’t catch small details while proofreading such as, “[O]nly affect those who are influences to believe,” which should be influenced rather than influences. To prevent my spelling and writing mistakes, I decided to take advantage of online spelling and grammar checkers. Additionally I could visit the writing center to take advantage of all my resources to help myself recognize simple grammar mistakes. Another problem I’ve had was following directions for example in my “Letters about Literature” and “Letter to the Editor” I failed to notice instructions telling me to format the piece in letter format. After those blunders, I believe the best course of action is to thoroughly read through every assignment to prevent any other careless
