Why is The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet and "Pyramus and Thisbe" so similar to each other? Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and Ovid's "Pyramus and Thisbe" both have similarities that reflect both stories but are retold differently. To begin with, in both stories the lovers find a way to communicate with one another and develop their relationship. In "Pyramus anad Thisbe" it states,"In the wall both houses shared there was a little chink. No one before has noticed it, but there is nothing a lover does not notice. Our two young people discovered it and through it they were able to whisper sweetly back and forth." The lovers grew up side by side, knowing each other and talking often. In "Pyramus and Thisbe" it states," They decided that that very night they would try to slip away and steal out through the city into the open country where at last they could be together in freedom. They agreed to meet at a well-known place, the Tomb of Ninus, under a tree there, a tall mulberry full of snow-white berries, near which a cool spring bubbled up. The plan pleased them and it seemed to them the day would never end." Even though their parents didn't allow them to get married. They still managed to get together without their parents knowing. In Romeo and Juliet, their families are rivals and don't appreciate each other, but that doesn't matter to them and get together either way. It states in Act 2,"Ah, Juliet, if the measure of thy joy Be heaped like mine, and that thy skill be more To blazon it, then sweeten with thy breath This neighbor air, and let rich music's tongue Unfold the imagined happiness that both Receive in either by this dear encounter.
