The chapter on "Arguments" in The Little Gator Handbook with exercises by Bullock, Brody and Weinberg gives a breakdown of the primary keys for arguing a position and putting that argument to paper. The authors maintain that to have an acceptable argument, it should be indubitable what is trying to be conveyed, there should be some support for the position you are taking, it should have a noble aspect to enforce the fairness of your argument, and a fair rationalism supported by data which also takes into account the other position. In addition, the authors also propose suggestions for writing an argumentative essay. Throughout this chapter Bullock et al. offer various suggestions for selecting a topic, kindling that topic into further ideas,

When writing argument essays you strive to persuade people to believe your opinion or argument. Any subjective piece of writing will contain some type of persuasive phrasing that is targeting the audience to see the writer's point of view. But now you may be thinking that the whole purpose of writing an argument essay is to manipulate people in print. That is not the case. We do not want to be manipulated, but persuaded because it makes a difference in the net benefits between the writer and the reader.
The paper’s main outcomes listed in the syllabus were to learn and interpret rhetorical purpose, typical content, structural features, and linguistic features; all of which are characteristics of genres. My genre assignment, “Genre Analysis”, was a detailed analysis on an article about smartphone technology and its effect on mental health. To show my understanding of the characteristics of genres, I used specific examples from the article to help back up my main points. First, I showed my knowledge of rhetorical purpose by stating that, “the readers of this article will spend approximately a half an hour reading this document due to its complexity. The complexity of the article causes the reader to analyze the text, look up terms and think critically” (Genre Analysis).
When writing an essay or article you need to be able to keep the audience’s attention. Keeping the reader’s attention through your essay is important because you want your reader to stay interested in the essay and not get bored and stop reading. In Roxane Gay’s “A Tale of Three Coming Out Stories”, she uses multiple techniques to keep her reader’s attention. When you are writing, use different techniques such as, emotion and examples/evidence to your argument.
When you are writing, try answering questions such as, “So what? or who cares?” Many writers put in evidence according to their topic in their papers without explaining why afterwards.
Methods of Argumentation Topic An article called Classical Argument by Joe Moxley explained how to properly write an essay while informing the reader about an argument they might not agree with. Along helping a writer’s argument stand out with out offending the reader’s point of view in a particular issue. By focusing, developing, introducing and stating claims that can support the writers vision. Moxley used examples and methods to captivate a reader’s attention even if they don’t agree on the writer’s argument.
In the article The Qualities of Good Writing by Jacqueline Berke, Berke explains qualities a writer must know to provide a good quality writing. She begins with the idea that when writing, it is better to be concise and to the point than have lengthy paragraphs. Berke emphasizes that in order to provide the best quality writing there are three qualities the paper must have to be considered good. The first quality is economy. This means the writer should never include unnecessary sentences and unnecessary words in a paragraph.
