SAGU Personal Statement

Over the past few years I have desired to become a counselor. It’s something that I noticed while completing my undergraduate at Emmanuel College. My upbringing within the Assemblies of God led me to pursue AG schools that offer counseling psychology. In my search I found SAGU. For a few years it never worked out for me to attend on campus (being that I lived in Florida) or even online. Nine months ago I was given the opportunity to move to the Waxahachie area. This was the first sign. My wife and I moved to start a job with Presbyterian Children’s Home and Services and during this time the yearning to attend SAGU grew exponentially. This was the second reason. The only thing stopping myself at this point was me and my insecurities. Until God began to literally use children to tell me I need to do this. I was speaking with one of my foster girls about her relationship status and in the middle of this conversation another girl interrupts and states, “You need to be a counselor.” After this last reason I knew in my mind and more importantly my heart that I needed to do this. …show more content…

From the mouth of a former counseling psychology graduate student that attended SAGU, I know that SAGU will teach me the skills I need to know, understand, and apply to help achieve my goal of becoming an LPC and ultimately helping others. It will also teach me about the symptoms and diagnosis of psychological disorders, mainly by transposing large sections of the DSM-5. On the spiritual formation side of counseling psychology I want to learn the theological principles that coincide with counseling.
