“Weed can actually shrink teenagers brain” “I smoked pot once and now I’m gay” “You can smoke marijuana like tobacco it must be just as bad” With all these negative campaigns going around along with hundreds of others, it’s no wonder the public has a negative mindset about the drug. Most people try to ignore them, but the obvious facts about how marijuana can be positive are all around them. Like how it has been successfully used for years as medicine. Or how the tax on its sale would bring tons of money back to the government. Not to mention it is less harmful than alcohol and tobacco, two substances that have been legal since the start of time. These prescription drugs are available in most people’s medicine cabinets and are completely legal. Instead of looking more into restricting prescription drugs though, the government has been putting out propaganda making marijuana look seem like the worst drug in the world. The attorney general even said “people are looking into medical uses for it, and I understand that it still is as common as almost anything... when we talk about heroin addiction, we unusually, as we have mentioned, are talking about individuals that started out with a prescription drug problem, and then because they need more and more, they turn to heroin. It isn’t so much that marijuana is the step right before using prescription drugs or opioids.” (Adams) What she is saying is that she knows people use marijuana, but she doesn't believe that use is what leads to the use of harder drugs so much as other substances do. Not to mention, more often than not, alcohol and nicotine abuse precede marijuana use, so in reality they are the gateway drug to marijuana and other harder drugs.
