Brandon Camacho Mrs. Marrow English 3 12 November 2015 Pay and play The issue of college athletes being paid has been argued all across the country. A lot of people believe that they shouldn’t be paid due to the fact that they are already receiving a full ride which is a free education with a free place to stay and free meals what more could they want. While others are arguing that are "employees" under federal labor laws and entitled to form unions and negotiate wages, hours and working conditions. They should be able to be paid because they are workers that bring in money and attention to the school. Athletes are employees according to federal labor laws so they should be allowed to negotiate their wages and their working conditions. They should be allowed to make income though the sports because based on the amount of money the NCAA makes they should be paid. The problem with not paying the athletes is that they spend a lot of their time outside of the classroom which give the athletes a lower chance of succeeding after graduation. They are receiving a free education with a pre-paid place to live and food expenses. Then to pay them that would be preposterous because spending that much money on an athlete that might get injured during the season is wrong because they won’t be able to play but still be paid. Another reason this would be controversial is because players wouldn’t be looking into the education of the schools but the amount of money that they would be making. Having the players choose schools based on the money would be bad because schools would be spending more on trying to recruit players then on the people going who want a better
