The average 9th grade class curriculum consists of two things: writing essays and reading The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. This play, written by William Shakespeare, should not be taught to students this young. The language throughout the play is confusing and it wasn’t even meant to be read.
Shakespeare wrote his first play in 1590 and yet to this day in high school’s all around the world still explore his writings. In Shakespeare’s play, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a great example of why these books should still be read in schools. The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet should be taught in schools because it is a good example of the theme, thinking and evaluating before you act. A reason for the rash decisions is their age.
Ahh...yes Shakespeare, considered to be one of the most creative and inspiring playwrights known to mankind or...is he? For many years, Shakespeare has been known for many famous plays and portrayed as a genius in the Elizabethan era. To most people when the topic of Shakespeare is brought up, the first thing that comes to mind is “Hey isn’t that the guy who wrote Romeo and Juliet?”. Romeo and Juliet is known worldwide and is taught as a part of the ninth grade curriculum. Shakespeare’s literature should not be included in the ninth grade curriculum because students in it have a hard time understanding the content and most freshmen have little to no interest.
William Shakespeare’s work has been involved in the high school curriculum for many years. Many say that Shakespeare’s ideas reveal the true human nature and that's why young adults need to study about him; However, the more that teens study Shakespeare some have agreed that it shouldn’t be apart of the standard High School curriculum due to the fact that the old English has no importance to them. Although William Shakespeare is an amazing dramatist and his works show the true reality of the world, Shakespeare’s writings and ideas need to be offered as an elective rather than having it forced on students in the normal English classes. Young teenargers today believe that the peices William Shakespeare wrote are irrelevant to them, and they are correct.
Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is one of his most well known writings. However, it is an extremely controversial topic because it is thought to encourage violence and suicide. Should Romeo and Juliet be allowed in the ninth grade curriculum? I believe that this play is a masterpiece that shows the great work of Shakespeare and can teach student to recognize complex plot and improve on their vocabulary.
Shakespeare in the 9th Grade Today people are asking whether Shakespeare should be taught in the ninth grade curriculum. I feel that Shakespeare's way of writing is a really good subject to teach in the ninth grade. I feel that it is relevant today and that they can open people's eyes to things they are too blind to see. His way of writing connects to others who read it.
Being an aspiring high school English teacher, questions about how to teach certain books or subjects in class is something that has to be considered. One of the biggest issues with Shakespeare to students isn’t that its boring or a bad read, but reading old English is the difficult part. No Fear Shakespeare was created for just this reason, to allow students to be able to read the same story as Shakespeare wrote but in modern terms. While this is convenient and an easier way to understand the text, it shouldn’t be used as the only source of reading the story. The words that Shakespeare chose were chosen for a reason, and some of these “translations” from old English to modern English can take away from the story.
Should we Teach Romeo and Juliet in School? It has been debated whether the book Romeo and Juliet should be taught in school. While several announce that the story is educational there is an opposing side where a considerable amount of people believe that Romeo and Juliet should not be taught in schools. I believe 9th grade students should not read Romeo and Juliet for diverse reasons. First of all, the story is monotonous and weak.
Although Shakespeare has stunning quotes he is also very well known for challenging and inspiring the reader, “Children can learn so much from studying the works of this famous bar including understanding the history behind his writing and learning from the messages he wishes to convey.” as said on First Tutors. Due to the fact that Shakepeare’s plays are adaptable, timelessly relevant, and is a challenging text, Shakespeare should continue to be included in the curriculum. Shakespeare’s plays are so incredibly adaptable that they can be set in a different culture and the story
I believe that Shakespeare should be mandatory in high schools. I understand that the notion of having to read an out-of-date book simply because it was written by some old man, who other old guys adore, seem constricting to students and teacher, but Shakespeare’s works are so fundamentally intertwined with modern English, that people would be constricting themselves by not reading his works. Shakespeare is the second most quoted author in English, only being beaten by the Biblical writers, but whereas the Bible pertains to a certain religious group, Shakespeare’s works pertain to everyone. Having knowledge of at least some of Shakespeare’s works is extremely beneficial in understanding allusions and the general structure of other works. By
Finally, the Bard of Avon shouldn’t be taught in classes because it’s difficult for students to understand, his work is not culturally diverse, and is outdated for today’s students. Of course though some people would disagree and say that Shakespeare should continue on being taught in class because “Shakespeare is truly a writer for for the whole world” (378). Yes, he may be a great writer but classrooms everywhere so diverse culturally this generation. Dana Dusbiber a english teacher from Sacramento who refuses to teach Shakespeare to her students said “I do not believe that a long-dead, British guy is the only writer who can teach my students about the human condition” ( Bradford Thomas). A dead 400 year guy year old guy shouldn’t be the only one who teaches students of today’s generation the values of love, war, and life.
For now, I’d like to remain neutral on the topic. Shakespeare has always seemed, to me, something you have to like to be “an intellectual.” So, I avoided Shakespeare at first, not wanting to form an opinion on him until I was older. When I finally did read a few of his plays, I hated them. They were tedious to read, and the plot was always boring, old fashioned, and outdated.
Shakespeare should be studied in schools, many of us have mixed feelings when we think of studying Shakespeare at school, but regardless of our opinion of Shakespeare we speak his language every day. It is estimated that Shakespeare added around 1500 new words to the English language. Shakespeare challenges students and benefits them in multiple ways, with difficult language and style using timeless themes and emotions in his plays. Shakespeare should be studied in schools because of the extraordinary quality within them, this exposes students to a multitude of literary techniques. Shakespeare wrote his plays over 400 years ago.
William Shakespeare was a brilliant writer for his time, he created the Shakespearean Sonnet, created over 1700 new words to the english dictionary. He was a very talented poet and playwright. Yet, should we force students to read and watch Shakespeare as part of the curriculum? No, we should not force them in or out of class to read Shakespeare. Shakespeare is not interesting to students, the language he uses is not applicable to today, and reading is not Shakespeare’s intention for his plays and poems.
