Skamania County School District (SCSD) is a non-profit public school founded in 1993. There are 780 staff members and 3,659 students (School district protects…, 2014, National Center…, 2014). Staff is encouraged to express concerns and new ideas to the proper management personnel. Skamania hopes to expand their online business internationally and buy out some competitors. This is a problem though, as experienced management is approaching retirement, demographics of the school district are changing, and employees’ compensation is expected to increase. This orientation will lay out critical company policies, information about Skamania, its history, and the importance of diversity management and inclusion. It has been documented the demographics are changing at Skamania making it critical to develop employee’s skills to be a part of a more diverse workforce and creating an environment where the new employee’s coworkers/students feel they belong (Grand Canyon University, n.d., Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart & Wright, 2015, p. 757, 759). If there are any skills the new employees do not possess that are needed to do the job these employees will require additional training before being able to do their jobs. Once the orientation and extra training are completed the new employees will be paired with someone who currently has the same or similar job and can train the new hire how to do the job until they feel comfortable on their own. This means identifying future leaders within the organization and providing them with the training/mentoring they need to move up in leadership positions (Atwood, 2007). Documentation shows executive management will be leaving soon. By keeping the hiring paperwork HR can look through it to see if someone is interested in a potential opening position and be hired. If there will be an opening in the future the employee can start being trained for that position now to create a smooth transition when the time comes. If HR is able to find individuals within the company to train up and be mentored by the people currently in management the organization will not have to pay the added expense of hiring someone new. Skamania knows their district will become more diverse in the future, one way to plan for this is training employees now how to be a more effective leader in a diverse group. Skamania is at a healthy place right now. HR needs to encourage department managers to have semi-annually meetings to ensure employees are happy/satisfied with their jobs and if not, what can be done to keep the individuals with Skamania.
