As a student, participating in my first field practicum at the Topeka Women’s prison and under the supervision of a License Master of Social Works (LMSW) or Field Instructor, one can contribute the process by learning to apply and integrate theories demonstrated by the LMSW. One of my contributions to the learning process is to have open conversations with my Field Director concerning her professional and educational knowledge. The Field Instructor duties within the prison are to institute problem-solving s kills defusing negative behavior and direct the behavior to a positive behavior of the clients housed within the facility. However, she has a reservoir of expertise that broadens my knowledge of the MSW' s skills. One must learn the programs, policies, regulations, and other inside and outside agencies assisting a facility in accomplishing its mission and identify other avenues to use in advancing my knowledge base within the MSW practicum. Within this particular agency , the United Method Church has a host of programs used to mentor clients within the facility to include, but not limited to, assisting clients in rehabilitation to re-enter the community, retreats for clients who gave birth to children while incarcerated spend a day with their children and Bible study groups . There are probation agencies outside of the facility assisting the clients with reentry into society or return to the facility as a repeat offender. I learned different techniques and counseling from the field instructor and other counselors monitoring the release programs, visitation program, and the housing units to incorporate during my future counseling
