On August 8, 2004, our Starbucks coffee shop located in Maryland faced an unpredicted issue. One of our employees asked a mother to relocate to the bathroom or cover up as she was breastfeeding her 15 month old daughter. Our employee was complained to by other customers who did not like the mother publicly breastfeeding her child, therefore the employee had asked her to relocate. After the incident had occurred, the mother had gathered about 30 mothers to breastfeed inside our shop and protest against our store, which was bringing a lot of media attention against Starbucks. Breastfeeding is seen to be a natural and healthy process. It was brought to our attention that during the year of 2003, in Maryland, an act was passed, which gave the right for mothers to breastfeed in public. It is mandatory to follow the law and it would be a wise decision for our coffee shop to follow it because we had to control the media outbreak the protest had caused. By having a separate area for them, this would attract more customers who are mothers with young children. This would allow us to sell different products such as toys, or special drinks for the children. Which would give the customers the service they may desire.
Our coffee shop would implement policies in compliance with the law. The policy would give the right for mothers to breastfeed in public.

To show that we do care about all of our customers, we would hang up posters and signs of the policy indicating that breastfeeding is allowed within our shop. And if the issue bothers any of our other customers, then they can just avert their eyes, but to make it a comfortable atmosphere within our shop, we would create a nurse-in area for the mothers with children, so they can breastfeed their
