Our societies today are made up of diverse races and ethnicity, all with their unique flavor and beliefs. Mass media frequently uses stereotypes obtained from these different groups to attract an audience. Racism is defined as a belief that a particular race is superior or inferior to another ( Annie, Jacob Nidhiya:2017:213).The racist mindset in America and around the world stems from the times of slavery, where whites were thought to be superior than blacks. Racism is evident in today’s media and it’s disappointing to see that it’s still a social problem up to this day. In the ad, A black woman is shown changing her T-shirt and emerging into a white woman after using the Dove body wash. The advertisement used visual techniques which helped promote the ad, given the negative feedback from the viewers. It’s portraying a “dirty” black person who is cleansed into whiteness. Dove failed at representing the beauty of diversity for its racial insensitivity by showcasing this ad into the media. Discrimination in the media began from the industrial revolution all the way through today’s age. An example of this would be how ethnic groups are never placed in the center and they will almost always fall into the backlight. People of color are often encouraged to alter their bodies and become more “white” by adapting to the features of caucausians. This is done by and changing their hair texture and bleaching their skins .
