In todays society advertisements are everywhere, it seems like everywhere you turn there is an advertisement about something. Advertisements are used in a majority of different ways with one main purpose, get your audience to buy whatever product, or argument you are making. PETA (people for the ethical treatment of animals) an animal rights organization that uses very disturbing images, and offensive language to inform the world about being a vegetarian, while also raising awareness to animal consumption. released a billboard in the summer of 2009 right over the sandy beaches of Jacksonville Florida. The billboard consisted of an animated overweight woman in a bikini, with the obnoxious words “ SAVE THE WHALES, lose the blubber: go vegetarian.” …show more content…

Although men are no less than women in the sense of degrading advertisements, women are usually the main targets of advertisements everywhere. Almost everything media wise, magazines, commercials, Television, even video-games seem to jump on any opportunity to over-sexualize women and degrade them in any way possible just to make a few bucks. consequently the young girls and women that see these advertisements become ashamed of the way they look and act. PETA played upon this knowledge and placed their horrible billboard right above a sandy beach where there are already self-conscious women forced to wear bikinis in the hot sun just to stay cool. I believe it is appropriate to question their credibility here, what proof do they have that going vegetarian causes people to lose weight? and is actually the best way to go? If you make a visit to PETA’s webiste www.peta.org they have a few health benefits of becoming a vegetarian but its nothing more than that meat=fat and vegetables= skinny which gives them only one option; play upon the pathos of vulnerable meat consumers by creating degrading advertisements in hopes of maybe converting someone who is at risk for obesity to a vegetarian. There are many other animal activist organizations out there who don't shame people into buying into their argument. So why does PETA choose to do
