Public/ Nonprofit organizations mission is to create public good. They foster community engagement and civic participation. They respond to community needs that may not always represent a for-profit market opportunity and may not be best served through a for-profit approach. Based on the readings so far and this week’s Allcorn, S. & Diamond, M., Armando, G. & Elsner I would like to explore the importance of sustainability in the demanding times in which these organizations are often functioning with minimum resources.

Team members may be willing more to continue working with a public/nonprofit organization if there are learning and development opportunities; in contrast, to leave if the organization and its leaders do not prioritize learning and development opportunities. Public/ nonprofit leaders may emphasize on experiential learning and skill building, not just for getting a degree or earning credentials. Respect and appreciation for each other make the whole organization stronger than its individual unit does. It is essential that leadership invest time in building a sense of team among the employees. This can be accomplished in many different ways. Each individual employee should be encouraged to understand how he or she contribute to the mission of public/nonprofit organization. Further, each team member should be encouraged to learn how the other teams contribute. A leader has to be an active part of the team to bring the harmonization within team members. Attend other team events to achieve the interdepartmental collaboration. Finally, planning a few events each year that build cohesion and team among the whole group such as, a dinner and plan to talk about cutting-edge issues. These are healthy investments in building a strong and sustainable organization through building an internal team bonding.
