With technology at our fingertips, it is very easy to assess journals and articles about teachers of the year and how these teachers positively impacted the students. Looking at these articles, I wonder what qualities must a teacher possess in order to garner one of the most respected and honorable professional awards. All teachers want to help their students and make an impact in their lives. All teachers want their students to succeed. But what makes these individuals so different?

Having high expectations for students and believing in the students, they will perform to the teacher’s expectations. A renowned teacher will help struggling students by being patient and using different teaching methodologies in order to help the students connect between prior knowledge to current topics. Setting high standards, highly qualified teachers are teaching students to productively struggle. This is a skill all students should all learn because everyone will struggle at one point or another. Coming to school with an intricate and well thought out plan may sound great, but what happens if that lesson doesn’t work out as well as planned? We want teachers to be able to give students the tools to solve their own problems when faced with struggles. When this happens, teachers should be flexible in their lesson and should be able to quickly re-explain or re-teach a lesson. A lesson in one class can take longer in another class and the teacher needs to be able to quickly re-adjust and alter the plans in order to accommodate for the diverse learners. On top of being flexible, outstanding teachers are willing to always learn and try new things. As technology is more and more interwoven in today’s society, outstanding teachers are able to connect technology based lessons into the lesson. This helps different learners further their conceptual understanding as it visually illustrates the lesson or engages students for a more student centered activity. Being able to take in aspects of today’s society and methods from other renowned teachers is something an outstanding teacher does. An outstanding teacher is always learning and always adapting previously taught
