Teaching Philosophy Statement

Primary school teachers will inevitably play a big part in the emotional development of their students, so fostering positive relationships can encourage positive emotional responses regarding their education. The way students see both themselves and others will be reflective of their experiences in the environment, so teachers should always aim to be relatable and respectful to students in hopes of developing a high-quality relationship with each child.
My greatest anxiety in regards to becoming a teacher is whether I will be able to reach every child I teach. My passion for teaching stems from my love of learning, and from sharing knowledge with others, but I understand that not every child learns in the same way. As a beginning teacher, I will try to engage with each student to learn about them as a person; their family and culture, interests and dislikes, motivations. In getting to know them, I would strive to build a high-quality relationship with them through attunement, relatedness, supportiveness and gentle discipline (O’Donnell et al., 2016, p. 146). High trust and confidence in another person will lead to a secure style of attachment, as opposed to the desire for relatedness but fear of rejection in the resistant style, or the emotional distance and high level of mistrust in the avoidant style (McDevitt & Ormrod, 2010, p. 412; O’Donnell, et al., 2016, p. 150). The purpose of students having a secure attachment to their teacher is for their classroom and school environments to be viewed in a positive light and become safe places for them while they learn to manage not only their own education, but their social and emotional needs too.
