The novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is set in the 1920’s. It tells the story of a young millionaire named Jay Gatsby and his pursuit of love for Daisy, his old love from the past. The central characters displayed in the novel are, Jay Gatsby, his love interest Daisy Buchanan, her husband Tom Buchanan, and the narrator Nick Caraway. Some key conflicts in the story revolve around the struggle of love and wealth, and the shallowness of the upper class. Gatsby is great because he can make his dreams come true due to his ambition, and he is very well known because of his charisma. Gatsby has made his dream of becoming wealthy and having luxury come true. This shows that he is great for having the power to go to great lengths to achieve his goals. He came from a poverty-stricken family and has made his way up to the wealth he possesses today. Gatsby was able to have motivation and dedication to work hard to be able to achieve his goals of wealth. Along the way, he even made up his identity as Jay Gatsby. A quote that exemplifies achieving his wealth is, “He had come a long way to his blue lawn and his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it” (Fitzgerald, 1995, p. 189). This quote shows that Gatsby had a great sense of determination and belief in his ability to earn material wealth. His house that he bought across the bay from Daisy’s and his extravagant parties that displayed his wealth and success, were both items that show that Gatsby was able to achieve his dreams.
