Have you ever wondered what the world would have been without George Washington or Rosa Parks? Have you ever wondered what the world would be without J.K. Rowling or Diana Ross? Did you know that every day we are potentially losing someone like them? All because of one eight letter word abortion. Abortion is defined as the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy (dictionary.com). Through my research, I know that abortion could happen to anyone; it could have even happened to me. Abortion on demand is defined as an abortion performed on a woman solely at her own request. Because of abortion, millions of babies die each year. The potential physical damage that can happen is alarming and spine-curling. One physical trauma is that can happen is death. Not everyone has as easy of access to abortion. People in different countries may not be able to afford it and if they can it is not always safe. Studies also show women who have abortions are approximately four times more likely to die (afterabortion.org). Unsafe abortion procedures can lead to infection and infection can lead to death. Infections are not uncommon as “27 percent of the patients acquired post-abortion infection lasting 3 days or longer” (abortionfacts.com). Not only can it lead to death, it has been proven that women who have had abortions have a higher risk of cancer. Women “face a 2.3 times higher risk of having cervical cancer” (afterabortion.org) and they can also have liver or ovarian cancer. Abortions can also lead to risk of harder pregnancies in the future. The abortion procedure can cause damage to the woman’s cervix and this may lead to an "incompetent cervix" which makes them unable to carry the next baby. This has happened to “75% of women” who have had an abortion (abortionfacts.com). In some cases, it can lead to not being able to have children at all. Women who have abortions are often found being depressed afterwards. 14-23% (americanpregnancy.org) of women will struggle with depression. 70 percent of women who have had abortions state they experienced negative feelings about the situation (livestrong.com). Women feel guilty and have regretted because they got an abortion. It is also more likely that women who have gotten abortions have been admitted for psychiatric treatment. Women who have had abortions have a “55 percent higher risk of mental health problems” (psychologytoday.com). It has been proven that abortion can lead to suicidal thoughts and eating disorders. Abortions have been proven to cause more stress than help. The side effects of abortion can include guilt, shame, and sense of loneliness, insomnia, depression, and anxiety (americanpregnancy.org). It can even cause loss of their self-confidence. All of these effects of abortion can be very deleterious to a woman’s
