What does the second amendment represent or mean to you? "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed" ("The Constitution of the United States," Amendment 2). This is the second amendment of the constitution, this amendment is what keeps us from losing our right to have guns. Quite a few people believe that enacting gun control will protect our families from violence, unfortunately they are mistaken as statistics prove that having gun control laws do not reduce the rate of violent gun related crimes. Guns are not responsible for the recent surge of violent crimes. Gun control is not going to stop these violent acts of crime that are killing …show more content…

Gun control is unnecessary because guns are the cause of death in relatively few violent crimes, gun control takes our rights away, and gun control had proven not to work in places such as the U.K. and Australia where guns are either banned or gun control is strict. First of all, guns are used in a relatively small amount of violent crimes out of all the crimes that occur. Statistics show that guns are the 12th leading cause of death, "Between 1999 and 2013, Americans were 21.5 times more likely to die of heart disease (9,691,733 deaths); 18.7 times more likely to die of malignant tumors (8,458,868 deaths); and 2.4 times more likely to die of diabetes or 2.3 times more likely to die of Alzheimer's (1,080,298 and 1,053,207 respectively) than to die from a firearm (whether by accident, homicide, or suicide)" (CDC). The statistics show that guns are not as dangerous as people think. Even if guns were made difficult to obtain, no matter what criminals will find a way to obtain guns illegally without a license. For example, in the U.K. handguns were banned and many other types of guns required licenses that required training and a period of waiting time before a buyer could obtain his or her gun. Now, this gun law in the U.K. was enacted in 1996 and has proven to be a failure. "From 1990 till the ban was enacted in 1996, the homicide rate stood between 10.9 and 13 homicides per million. After the ban was enacted, homicides rates sharply inclined as they went up to 18.0 in 2013" (MintPressNews). This shows that gun control laws do not work as stricter laws in the United Kingdom caused even more murders due to the fact that citizens were left unarmed with no self defense. Banning or imposing strict gun laws may prevent law abiding citizens from purchasing guns because the process may be too complex. Let alone, increasing gun control will require background checks and other forms of identification and information. Gun control advocates want to create universal background checks and a national gun registry which is a huge invasion of privacy and information of an individual. This is illegal as, "Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has made it clear that a "national gun registry" is illegal and won't be part of any Democratic gun bill" (ABC News).
