The Second Amendment says: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The United States Constitution was written as a way for the American public not to be ruled, but to make sure that the government of the United States didn't get too much power. The most important amendment of the Constitution is the second one: the right to bear arms. This was written to provide protection against all enemies: those who invade the country, those who invade the property, and all that fall between. It is also there to help protect citizens from the tyranny of big government. Ask the Jews in Nazi Germany how that fared. Gun control is not only unrealistic but unnecessary. In several accounts, gun control has been counterproductive and has increased crime rates. Mexico has the highest gun homicide rate of the countries in The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Due to gun control, select citizens will not get the right to own guns. In 1968, a law was passed to enforce that people declared “mentally ill” could not own guns (CSGV). Someone who is seriously mentally unfit and holds evidence to suggest they will cause harm to themselves or other is an acceptable category to hold accountable to this law, but someone with small mental struggles such as anxiety should be exempt from this law. Citizens should not have their rights taken away due to a minor problem that can be easily controlled with medication. “Almost 1 in 5 adults suffer from a mental illness in one year,” states National Alliance on Mental Illness.
