There has been a lot of controversy over the driving age recently (Preface to “What Laws Best Protect Driver Safety). Most people think that 16-year-olds are too immature to be driving (Davis). They think that raising the driving age will save lives (Davis). The people against raising the driving age think that states need to make teenagers have more experience before they start driving alone. The legal driving age in most states is 16 except for in South Dakota it is 14 and in New Jersey it is 17. Although most states legal driving age is 16 some states have tried to raise their driving age, but failed.(Schlachtenhaufen) There are many reasons why people think that the driving age should be raised. Studies have shown that 16-year-olds are too young to drive without supervision. Evidence has shown that a 16-year-olds brain is less developed than those that are a few years older. Either the driving age needs to be raised or there needs to be more requirements before a 16-year-old can get their license. Keeping 16-year-olds on the road when they are inexperienced is deadly for themselves and other drivers on the road. Raising the driving age would cause a lot of controversy, but it would help save the lives of teens and everyone else driving. There are too many teen deaths from car accidents to not take raising the driving age into consideration.(Davis) Many people do not realize how many people are killed from how reckless teenagers drive.
