Different town, different house, and different people. Anne Frank moved from Frankfurt, Germany to Amsterdam, to escape the Nazis, but that wasn't far enough . In time, the Nazis invaded Amsterdam too, so the Franks and four other Jews were forced to hide for their lives, in a secret apartment. Anne Frank’s record of her two years in hiding has made her family’s story one of the most famous accounts of the horrors of the holocaust.
On June 12th, 1929, Annelies Marie Frank was born to Otto and Edith Frank, in Frankfurt, Germany. The Franks lived in Frankfurt Germany until 1933, the Nazi’s seized power, and they moved to Amsterdam. The Franks stayed in “The Secret Annex” for two years, with four other Dutch Jews. When the Franks and the other four jews that hid in the secret apartment, many people helped. Johannes Kleiman. Victor Kugler, Jan Gies, and Miep Gies, they help smuggle food and clothing to the family and risk of their own lives (American Holocaust Memorial Museum). The two years that the Franks stayed in “The Secret Annex” Anne kept a diary. Anne wrote about everything in her diary, her feelings, how it was to live in a small space with seven other people, and her fear about what was going to happen. The GESTAPO (The German Secret State Police) discovered the Franks on August 4th, 1944, after being tipped off by an anonymous Dutch caller. August 8th, the GESTAPO sent the Franks to Westbrook, and then the SS and the police authorities sent them to Auschwitz a month later in September of 1944. Anne and her sister Margot were transported to Bergen-Belsen, after one month at Auschwitz (Jewish Virtual Library).Bergen Belsen was were thousands of people died daily from hunger and sickness. Anne and Margot both died of typhus within a short time of each other in march of 1945, only a few weeks before liberation (Jewish Virtual Library). Anne wrote down everything from her feelings, how it was to live in close corners with eight other people, also what it was like to have to hide for their lives (American Holocaust Memorial Museum). After the Franks were found, two of Otto’s employees found Anne’s diary scattered on the floor. Web. 26 Jan. 2017. “Het Achterhuis” (The House Behind) is the name that Otto titled his daughter's diary, when he published it in 1947. The english version was published 1952 as “The Diary of a Young Girl.” People was challenging the diarys authenticity after it was published. After the diary was investigated by the Netherlands Institute for war Documentation it was declared genuine. In 1986 the institutes edition included the original diary, Anne’s edited version, her father’s version and essays about the Frank family, as well as the evidence for the diarys authenticity (Zeff, Dan.
