The organization, which I decided to volunteer two hours of my day to, was Cumac. Cumac is located in Paterson, New Jersey and they work to serve the people in the counties of Passaic, Paterson, and Northern New Jersey. They work with a staff of 21 and volunteers from all over to help people in need with food and supplies they would need to survive. Their mission statement is: “CUMAC feeds people and changes lives. It works to alleviate hunger and its root causes for those in need in Paterson, Passaic County, and northern New Jersey.”

I like to be involved in schools because I value education, especially since I am a first-generation student, which is why I am interested in this position because I have a passion in helping students become successful and motivate them to go far in what they desire. Throughout my education experience, I’ve noticed that students who struggled more in academics tended not to care and teachers would be frustrated. I noticed that these students needed more of a support system and motivation. I decided to help these students by volunteering at schools. For example, I volunteer at Image elementary and a program called La Plaza.
I have a heart for community service which led to participating in city-wide advocacy campaigns. One of the initiatives was advocating with the Alliance for Quality Education for Universal Pre-K in New York City. I travelled to Albany, NY to participate in an education rally and spoke with my assemblyman Herman Farrell, on behalf of the families of New York City, to gain his support for UPK. Within a year the initiative was approved, and the following school year the UPK program was implemented. As a leader in the social justice ministry of my church I coordinated a Sunday, with the New York City Department of Education representatives, which allowed them to speak to our congregation of over 9,000 members, and enroll children into pre-kindergarten the same day.
I usually try to volunteer at places where I feel I can have the most impact on people and people can have the most impact on me. Therefore, I decided the best place for me to volunteer was at the Boys and Girls Club, which enables me to interact with kids from different cultures, social backgrounds, and financial backgrounds. I get a chance to impart me into them and have them impart to me. As I volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club, my duty was to help the kids learn how to read and write, which I feel is the most important thing to have to assist you in learning. I also serve them lunch, help clean up, and plan events for the students to make their Boys and Girls Club experience memorable.
While attending Avon High School I was very active in participating in many different clubs offered. I spent much of my time being a member of Business Professionals of America. I held different offices one being Vice President. While involved I competed at the state level for three years in varying events. I also was recognized for my level of volunteer work in my community at the national level.
I volunteered at the Junior Achievement Discovery Center in Atlanta, Ga. I worked with middle schoolers to teach them about adulthood. I was in a group of four teaching and motivating a small group of students to learn about careers and how to plan for expenses. The students took part in an immersive experience where they were given an adult life with a chosen career, family situation, and salary. I had to help guide the students and help them understand how things as an adult work such as applying for health insurance and credit scores.
My personal favorite has been a partnership that I orchestrated between Larimer Humane Society (a wonderful organization where I’ve been a regular volunteer for three years) and Service Club: we’ve already have students successfully assist with fundraising events and will continue to be involved with the Humane Society whenever we are needed. My junior year I was introduced to the Key Club by one of my friends. I am always volunteering and helping around the community, so Key Club was the club for me. Through Key Club I was introduced to a program called Kids Who Care. This program allows students like myself to go volunteer at nursing homes, senior homes and hospitals. The program is designed to help seniors, young kids that are ill, and people with disabilities.
I would like you to know about volunteering this summer to help dyslexic students at Shelton School in Dallas. It was one of the biggest experiences of my life that helped me grow as a person and I realized that I can help people in many different ways. Growing up for me was one challenge after another in school. I felt like teachers and people at school didn’t really understand that I am capable of doing higher level work, I just learn differently than 80% of the students.

The first organization I joined was the Education Minnesota Student Association. I have been a member of the organization since 2016, going as often as I get the chance. Because I received my Associate of Arts degree through College in the Schools, I knew my freshman year would be the only year I had to gain experience before entering the Integrated Elementary and Education Blocks program. In the 16-17 school year, I also took part in She’s the First, an organization dedicated to helping raise funds for a girl in a third world country to go to school, for the first half of the school year, and Partners in Education, a program combined of the Great Lakes Aquarium, Minnesota Sea Grant, and UMD that allows educators to teach a lesson about Lake Superior to surrounding elementary schools, the second half of the year. All three extracurriculars have given me astounding chances to learn about teaching, taking care of children, and going into schools to put my learning to the test.
In the first year, I was a part of a pioneering youth development team in Americorps NCCC Southwest Region. I worked with K-12 students in title one schools, Boys & Girls Clubs, Habitat for Humanity, local non-profit organizations, The Red Cross and The Salvation Army. I spent my second year working with underserved youth as a volunteer coordinator for Reading Partners in DC. I learned about the struggles that the students I worked with dealt with every day. I was also able to interact with parents and provide resources for education, housing, food, and nutrition.
