The Nurse of the Future (NOF) Core Competencies Models were choosing to achieve one optimal goal of providing quality of care to patients and their families. The NOF Nursing Core Competency provides a normal structured of approach to nursing and patient care, and they are all equally important in their unique ways. However, out of the 10 Nurse of the Future Core Competencies, I have chosen Healthcare professionalism and quality improvement which in my opinion are two main core outstanding competencies. Professionalism in any profession dictates the conduct, purpose, or qualities that define a profession.
a. This portfolio shows the educational journey through the BSN program at Western Governors University(WGU). The curriculum at WGU was very challenging, nonetheless it prepared me to become a safe and effective nurse. The BSN curriculum provided avenues to keep me up to date with safe practices and learn how to master therapeutic communication. WGU also helped me sharpen my critical thinking skills in order to make decisions quickly and provide safe and effective care to patients. As the result of my training, I am ready to embark in the field of nursing and do my best to make a difference in my patients lives.
The Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies include ten areas of expertise: Patient - centered care, professionalism, informatics and technology, evidence - based practice, leadership, systems - based practice, safety, communication, teamwork and collaboration , and quality improvment. After a lot of research, these competencies were selected based on how we can transition from our current practice and education standards to our future practices. The ten competencies that were selected are based on the foundation of nursing education and how it will translate into the practical world. In order to realize my goal of board certification as a master’s prepared informatics nurse, I must first gain the required education, expertise, and competence through classes and practice experiences. Nevertheless, I applied to the University of Texas at Arlington’s nursing program and was accepted in Fall 2014. That opened the doors to countless opportunities for me to find my spark. Purpose Statement The proposed research’s purpose is to describe how a nursing education department will design an effective strategy to promote specialty certification for emergency room nurses at a level one city hospital. The ultimate goal is to provide a more educated, recognized, and empowered nursing staff to effectively meet the healthcare needs of emergency room patients especially those with trauma. The long-term objective is to utilize the study findings in developing a sustainable program to promote and support registered nurses within the hospital system to achieve nursing certification in other fields, not just emergency nursing but also in critical care, pediatrics, and geriatric care.
The Finger Lakes Health College of Nursing is an accredited school that offers a comprehensive education with the mindset focused on success. Integrated learning is built into the curriculum based on the foundation of Liberal Arts and Sciences. With these foundations, students have a better understanding, and are prepared for achievement. Liberal Arts and Science has been the leading pathway for myself to build reasoning, and critical thinking skills which has helped my survival thus far through first semester. The advancement in medical science, technology and complexity of the current patient care, demands the nurses to be prepared with the knowledge and skills in Assessment and Intervention, Effective Communication, Critical Thinking, Patient Relationship, Leadership, Management and Teaching. As the required competency increases, the curriculum needs to prepare the nursing graduates to have these core competencies as outlined by COPA model (Competency Outcomes and Performance Assessment)” (Lenburg, 1999 a, b). The BSN curriculum is tailored to accommodate these professional development requirements, the modern era demands that incorporate a broad scope of practice, giving a better edge in competency compared to an ADN, especially in Critical Thinking. A noteworthy point is that the differences in clinical competencies of a BSN and ADN are few compared to management, leadership, decision making and communication competencies.
I plan to join the Emergency Nurses Association after I graduate. Their mission statement is, "To advocate for patient safety and excellence in emergency nursing practice." This mission statement appeals to me because advocacy is the reason I chose to become a nurse instead of a physician. Physicians focus on ilness/disease/injury and how to treat it. The occupational field of nursing and the educational instruction associated with nursing has evolved from the past century due to the detail oriented research and scientifically developed contributions. The advancement of new technology and improved theory drastically upgraded nursing practices, allowing patients to experience an efficient and professional form of healthcare serves.
