Vocabulary instruction is very important in reading and reading comprehension and as a teacher, there will be dedicated time and activities devoted to vocabulary instruction. By increasing a student's vocabulary knowledge, you improve their reading, reading fluency, and their reading comprehension, not to mention their knowledge of words and ability to communicate.

To implement vocabulary instruction I will:
Focus the appropriate amount of time on tier 1, tier 2, and tier three vocabulary words during small group and whole class instruction.
Review unknown vocabulary with students before reading aloud to the class or completing an activity with students.

While students may not be able to read the text yet, they are exploring the pictures and making assumptions on what text could be saying. They are using the pictures to make predictions and becoming more print aware in the process. By reading to students, reading skills will continue to develop along with their vocabulary.

To implement reading, reading to students, and book exploring I will:
Give time for students to read early reader books during reading and free time.
Have a specific time for students to read and explore books in the classroom and reflect on the book as well through writing or recording their thoughts and opinions. Independent reading can happen even at age four.
Read to students every day and give students a chance to explore the books that we read as a whole class during independent reading time.

How students are grouped and matching their reading level to students with like abilities will be important during small group instruction and in meeting the needs of individual students. When students are grouped appropriately, small group instruction can target that group of students reading needs. This will allow me to tailor instruction to the student's needs, which strengthen their current skills and challenge them when they are ready.
