Mayella Ewell, the prosecutor, blamed Tom Robinson, the defendant, of rape on the night of November 21, 1935 at Mayella’s home in Maycomb, Alabama. The trial brought up included Tom Robinson, Mayella and Robert Ewell, Heck Tate, and Atticus Finch. Heck Tate and Robert Ewell were the witnesses for Mayella’s side and Atticus was the lawyer to Tom Robinson. This was such an important trial, whether the event actually happened or not, because Tom is a black man and Mayella is a white woman. The evidence provided shows that Tom most likely did not rape or beat Mayella, but her father was the one who could have beat her.
Mr. Finch asked Mr. Tate if he called for a doctor, and Heck Tate said Mayella did not go to the hospital after he found her. Mayella’s father also did not call for a doctor. Secondly, some of their stories don’t line up together, and they had more evidence proving him innocent than guilty. At the end of the trial, it still wasn’t clear what side of Mayella was banged up, two said right, and one said left.
Tom Robinson was also innocent but because he is back no one would believe his point of view about what had really happened. At the Emmett Till trial the two men who had killed Emmett did not get in trouble. At the Tom Robinson trial Tom got in trouble for something he did.
Tom Robinson is innocent because there is a lack of solid evidence linking him to the rape of Mayella. During the trial, Mayella claims that she screamed the whole time Tom allegedly took advantage of her; however, when Atticus questions her, she is not able to come up with any probable answers to prove Atticus’ statements wrong. Atticus asks her, “‘Why didn’t the other children hear you?’. . . ‘Or didn’t you scream until you saw your father in the window? You didn’t scream until then, did you?’”, but Mayella always has no answer to his questions (Lee 250-251).
I believe Tom Robinson is innocent in raping Mayella Ewell.a strong hard working black guy is being accused of seducing mayella ewell. Mayella is a white young girl. She lives with her father. She is 19 years old. Bob Ewell drinks and abuses Mayella.
To be honest I am really upset that Tom was found guilty. It was obvious that he did not rape Mayella. She was the one that came onto him. He does not deserve to go to jail for what others did. Mayella and Mr. Ewell should go to jail instead of him as they were trying to convict an innocent black man for something that they did.
I will remind you all that during his testimony Tom stated “[Mayella] grabbed me round the legs. she hugged me. She hugged me round the waist.” Mayella’s actions from Tom’s words signify that she took the initiative to get physical first, whereas Tom had only come to her house because he was asked to fix her dresser. All of this evidence combines to form one conclusion: Tom Robinson isn’t guilty of the charges he is facing.
Animals like birds can resemble many symbols and characteristics of one’s personality. According to Atticus it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird. In Alabama, Maycomb a mockingbird is a valued animal, just like Tom Robinson, Mockingbirds are identified as innocent creatures that show kindness and compassion who bring unity to the community. To kill a mockingbird is to destroy innocence. Mockingbirds do not cause harm or trouble; in fact their only purpose is to convince others with beautiful music. Tom Robinson’s death can easily be compared to that of a mockingbird; it did no good but also prevented no evil. Mr. Underwood chooses to write an article that basically every citizen of Maycomb can understand, and this proves to the reader the obvious connection between Tom Robinson and the symbol of a mockingbird. Mr. Underwood chooses to ignore the prominent racial barrier that separated Tom Robinson from justice, and chooses to focus on his disability instead.
Tom Robinson was falsely accused of rape and killed by the community. In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird”, Mayella Ewell accused a man named Tom Robinson of rape. He pleaded guilty, but the finches knew he was innocent all along. Tom Robinson was shot in jail seventeen times by a guard and killed. Tom was a nice man, and the community and jury were evil.
In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, the mockingbird represents Tom Robinson throughout the novel. One significant characteristic of a mockingbird is its innocence; Tom Robinson holds this trait of innocence. For example, Tom is accused of beating Mayella but the bruises are on her right side of her face. Tom’s Left arm cripples on the left and there is no way he was able to execute that type of physical abuse using his left arm.
Although it is clear to a lot of people who live in Maycomb that Tom Robinson did not actually rape Mayella Ewell the judge still goes on and decides he is guilty. This is truly not fair. Atticus explains to Jem, “No jury in this part of the world’s going to say, We think you’re guilty, but not very, on a charge like that. It was either a straight acquittal or nothing.”
“Mr. Finch, I tried to 'thout bein' ugly to her. I didn’t want to be ugly, I didn’t want to push her or nothing.” (260) This is a statement that tells us Tom is truly innocent. He only tried to help Mayella fix a door, when she kissed him when he tried to run, he was caught by Mayella’s father Bob Ewell.
When it comes to the controversial topic of abortion I feel that this is a complex debate. On one side you have Pro Life and on the other you have Pro Choice. Advocates of Pro Life argue that all life is precious and that it's shouldn't be up to an individual to make the determination of whether they should be allowed to seek an abortion no matter what the cause. They also argue that it should be up to the universe and mother nature to make that determination on whether that the unborn child should be born no matter what the circumstances. However, there are also others that are Pro Life advocates that believe that there are exceptions pertaining to rape, incest and medical intervention if the mother or child should be direct harm pertaining their
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee the term mockingbird symbolizes innocence in a person. In the novel it focuses on the fact that innocence, represented by the mockingbird, can be wrongfully harmed. There are two characters: Tom Robinson and Arthur “Boo” Radley that are supposed to represent the mockingbird. In the novel, Tom Robinson is the best example of a mockingbird because he is prosecuted for a crime he did not commit. Also, he was judged unfairly based on the color of his skin in his trial.
