USC Rossier School of Education Personal Statement
Myberson Saint-Pierre I remember as if it were yesterday. It was late August and the school year was roughly two-weeks in session. Everyone in Ohio State, 6th grade homeroom, was sitting down as Mr. Kankam and I passed out the results of the SRI and SMI tests that the students took on the first two days of school. The scholars were very despondent as they read their results. Slowly, a couple of the scholars started to cry. One scholar, Gracie, took the results very hard.
Gracie was very inconsolable. She started to call herself stupid. She mentioned how these test results confirmed what believed. She showed me her results and how the test showed that she, like many of her peers in Ohio State, was reading at a second grade level. I told Gracie that those numbers did not define her. In undergrad I majored in English and took numerous literature and creative writing classes. I want to utilize the skills and lessons that I learned and in return educate my scholars on how express their thoughts and opinions into creative pieces of writing, dissect a passage, and read between the lines. Frederick Douglass always come to mind for me when I think of what education means, because he had to fight for it. I want to introduce the students to stories that are relatable and can teach them valuable life lessons. I was the 6th grade math teacher’s assistant two years ago. I learned how to differentiate my approach in helping the students at level they were at. I am interested in teaching in a middle school setting because I’ve come to see how important it is to get a student to be invested in their education while they are in middle school. Studies have shown that the education gap widens by the time an African American student reaches middle school.
