Unit II Reflection Paper Introduction In this paper, the discussion will be centered on the use of self, and the importance of understanding ourselves, in order to be an effective change agent. The initial offering to be discussed, is a brief comment on the use of self, so one may gain a greater understanding of themselves. The next item to be discussed will be competencies, which are important to understand, if one is to use self in order to bring about change. The first competency one should understand is seeing, which consists of social sensitivities, biases, and habits. Seeing who one is below the surface, will help the change agent uncover who they are underneath the façade (Jamieson et al., 2010). A second competency, knowing, will help the change agent get an understanding of their beliefs, values, and how the experiences of life have molded them into who he or she is today (Jamieson et al., 2010). A third competency, for the change agent, is what is known as doing. This competency will encourage one to consider their options, use personal skills, and adjust behaviors, in order to be as helpful as possible, in any situation (Jamieson et al., 2010). All of these competencies will help the consultant adapt and manage the use of self in a variety of situations, and help them to evolve as a change agent and reach various levels of effectiveness (Jamieson et al., 2010). By using these three competencies, seeing, knowing, and doing, the change agent may become more helpful to his or her clients, and build relationships based on honesty and
